It is not likely to see this kind of acting from Akshay Kumar. The actor usually impressed the critics as well as the fans with his films. However, he failed this time he failed terribly with Laxmii (Bomb). And the actor also failed to amplify the debate on the transgender community. This movie for sure broke the record of Dil Bechara’s first day opening on Hotstar. But it is only for the first day. And most of the people who watched just gave average or mixed reviews to this film.
The story of this film revolves around the male protagonist of the film, Asif (Akshay). He doesn’t believe in the existence of ghosts. He is so confident he declared that if he ever witnesses one then he begins to wear bangles. Apart from being unconscionably offensive from the perspective of gender sensitivity, his weird statement of intent makes as little sense as anything that the rest of the film has to offer.
When the revengeful spirit got into Asif, one of the first things he does is sport fresh red bangles. He grinds his teeth, ululates threateningly, and uses a swaying motion to show that he is no longer the Asif that his wife Rashmi (Kiara Advani) used to know. Rashmi and her parents (Rajesh Sharma and Ayesha Raza) and brother (Manu Rishi) and sis-in-law (Ashwini Kalsekar) are terrified by Asif’s feminine activities.
Laxmii is a remake by writer-director Raghava Lawrence of his own 2011 Tamil hit movie Muni 2: Kanchana, which is a horror-comedy that is more comical than funny, more horrid than horrific. It is less a movie than an intense ordeal void of any appearance of a bright spot.
Interestingly the trans-gender bhoot, a sharp whining ball of agitated energy, doesn’t show up until half of the film is done. When Akshay’s Laxmii enters the screen the viewers are far too exhausted watching the actors run around helter-skelter to care about her.
Overall, the whole film is a one-man show by Akshay Kumar. The poor script and direction of this film made it just a pretty average film to watch.
